Adventure on the Costa Verde: surfing and paragliding in Miraflores
Lima has a coast, and a better one than many people imagine. The strip of beaches and cliffs that runs along the city is called the Costa Verde, and along the Miraflores stretch it gathers some of the best outdoor activities in the capital. Surfing for all levels
Lima is one of the few capitals in the world where you can surf within the city. The beaches at the foot of Miraflores offer waves all year round:
- Playa Makaha — The favorite for beginners, with surf schools and board and wetsuit rentals right on the beach.
- Playa Waikiki — A classic among local surfers, with consistent waves.
- Playa Redondo and La Pampilla — More options along the shoreline.
It doesn't matter if you've never stood on a board: there are lessons to start from scratch. The water is cool (a wetsuit is best), but surfing with the boardwalk as your backdrop is well worth it.
Paragliding over the ocean
The most spectacular activity on the Costa Verde is paragliding off the Miraflores cliffs. You fly tandem with an instructor, no experience needed, and glide over the buildings, the parks and the Pacific. It's one of the images that visitors to Lima remember most.
Biking and running on the boardwalk
Above the cliffs, the boardwalk is a perfect green corridor for running or cycling with the sea always in view. You can rent a bike and ride for miles through well-kept, well-lit parks, connecting Miraflores with Barranco. Early morning is when it's best enjoyed.
After the adventure, the terrace
The best part of having so much within reach is the return. After a morning of surfing or a paragliding flight, you come back to Lima Penthouse, take a shower and head up to the terrace to recharge while looking out at the sea.
